Web Home Page: The oldest wildlife reserve is Malawi, Nkhotakota is best known for its dramatic scenery. Covering 1 802 km, it lies in the hills of the East African Rift Valley escarpment and is dominated by Chipata Mountain. Several rivers flow through the reserve to Lake Malawi, principal among them being the Bua River, whose course is broken by some impressive waterfalls. The vegetation in the reserve is predominantly miombo woodland and rain forest, ad supports a number of game species, including elephant, plains zebra, sable, bushbuck and buffalo and some lion; these are generally difficult to spot. Bird-watching can be very rewarding here, with a great variety of species being seen. Location: Central part of Malawi; north of Lilongwe. Access: From Lilongwe travel north-eastwards towards Salima for about 70 km before turning left and continuing north-wards on M5 to Nkhotakota village; from Nkhotakota drive westwards toward Kasungu; this road (M18) passes through the reserve. During the rainy season access is possible only by 4x4 vehicles. Permission to enter the reserve must be obtained in advance from the authority Accommodation: Chipata Camp has a rondavel, a student hostel and a camping site. Bua Camp has a caravan and a camping site. Wodzi Camp has a camping site. Facilities are very basic. Other facilities: Game-viewing roads; guided walks on Chipata Mountain and along the Bua River; fishing for lake salmon at Bua (licence required). The nearest supplies are at Nkhotakota village.
